Avocado milkshakes are a Filipino thing. One of the yummiest avocado recipes, might I add, but have you tried an avocado smoothie? It’s much healthier! This vegan smoothie is creamy and dreamy. Made with ripe avocado, oatmilk, a touch of natural sweetener, and vanilla so it’s not-too-sweet…you’re gonna taste how avocado levels up in less than five minutes.

Sweet home Avocado

Avocado doesn’t have to be in just salads or guac. In fact, there is a lot to know about sweet avocado drinks. My love for avocado started as a young wee child and I knew since then that avocado was this magical fruit.

To my dismay, I was utterly shocked to know that I must have been the only one sugaring my avocado!

What you might ask? Yes, sugaring my avocado as I like to describe it. Avocado, dusted with sugar and either eaten with a spoon, or cut up into a bowl of milk.

Nowadays, I indulge in avocado sago (like an elevated avocado con yelo) from time to time.

This avocado smoothie channels a little bit of that nostalgia with natural sweetener and healthier ingredients (than traditional Filipino avocado shakes). Making this delight, perfect for breakfast or as a post-workout snack.

This magic fruit is the ideal creamy and mild flavor when ripe. Pick an avocado that is firm, but has softness to the touch. It should be nicely colored hues of green and not bruised when you cut it open. The halves should separate easily without attaching to the pit.

How to Pick a Ripe Avocado

While different varieties may have other indicators for ripeness, these tips are mostly useful when choosing a ripe avocado.

  • Dark green skin, but not too dark or black
  • Flick off the stem nub. If it comes off with some resistance and is green underneath, it’s a good avocado. If it just falls off, and looks black underneath, it’s most likely overripe.
  • The skin should be more even and smooth, not indented
  • Firm to the touch, and yields when gently pressed
  • If the skin is too dark, uneven, dimpled, and the avocado feels too soft or just mushes inward, it’s overripe or spoiled

More than a Salad Topping

These days we now see things like avocado ice cream, and it’s seeming to become more popular in mainstream boba tea places…avocado shakes. Sweet variations of mainly avocado recipes.

I love it and part of me says, I’ve been doing this!

So here we are…and if you’re new to sweet avocado prepare to be enlightened. Now as I aforementioned, avocado milkshakes are definitely a Filipino thing and it’s been happening since forever ago. If you’re ready for a decadent dessert, then you’ll want to go for the gusto with that version.

If you’re thinking what I’m thinking, avocado smoothies are much more on the health and well-being side of ingredients. Plus it’s an awesome vegan recipe! Something I can go with, because now, you can have avocado smoothies once a week.

Not only are avocado smoothies filling and dense on healthy fats and nutrients, adults and kids love this take on avocado.

It’s so smooth and creamy, mild in flavor, and taste rich without actually having too many excess sugars or fats added in. In fact, it’s not very sweet, so you can taste the avocado and feel good about it.

That is an important aspect of this vegan inspired recipe, that the avocado and all its myriad health benefits are highlighted and not overshadowed and not taken away from excess sugar or saturated fat in this recipe.

Reasons to Try an Avocado Smoothie

  • filling and satiating
  • healthier fat with rich, indulgent taste
  • not too sweet
  • post workout shake
  • healthy mind and body benefits
  • avocado is a superfood
  • a great meal on the go, or for busy people

Ingredients in Avocado Smoothie

  • One ripe avocado
  • Oatmilk or Almondmilk– Use your preference, but I recommend regular oatmilk or almondmilk.
  • Vanilla extract – a quality, fresh extract really lifts the flavor in the avocado smoothie
  • Blue agave sweetener – low on the glycemic Index and tastes excellent (If you replace the blue agave with brown sugar, my oh my, it becomes a real treat and imparts warm, caramel notes)
  • Three big Oatmilk or Almondmilk ice cubes – that’s right. Use frozen “milk” cubes so you don’t get any dilution from water ice cubes. It makes it so much more rich and icy.

Equipment

high speed blender or hand-held immersion blender (These are the two I personally have for many years, and love.)

Simply blend well and serve! Take it all up a notch by adding granola with chia on the top and serve this with a long spoon. Voila, breakfast is ready.

An avocado smoothie are very simple to make and are the perfect start to a long day. This version of unique and Filipino avocado recipes has become so popular in my house and amongst friends that I hope you try it too, guilt free!

Benefits of Avocado

High in mono saturated fat (the good fat) that researchers show is heart healthy and lowers blood pressure. Eat in moderation as anything, but avocado has much less saturated fat and therefore, is a good choice when you want an an indulgent-feeling snack.

Avocado is a super food that is nutrient dense in vitamins, folate, fiber, and phytonutrients.

Promotes less calories consumption from the filling effects of the avocado.

Avocado and this avocado recipe is kid-friendly, kid tested, and kid approved by many.

One of my favorite recipes are avocado spring rolls when I have extra avos at home.

I also love avocado in combination with breakfast scrambled eggs.

How to Store Avocado

To traditionally store avocados properly and extend their shelf life, follow these steps:

  1. Choose the right avocados: Select avocados that are ripe but not overly soft. They should yield slightly to gentle pressure when squeezed.
  2. Keep them at room temperature: If you have unripe avocados, leave them at room temperature to ripen. This usually takes 2-4 days. Placing them in a paper bag can speed up the process.
  3. Refrigerate once ripe: Once your avocados are ripe, you can store them in the refrigerator to slow down the ripening process. Place them in the produce drawer or in a sealed plastic bag to prevent them from drying out. They can last in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  4. Preserve cut avocados: To store a cut avocado, squeeze some lemon or lime juice over the exposed flesh to prevent browning. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. It is best to use it within a day or two for optimal taste and texture.

Remember, avocados can vary in ripeness, so it’s important to check them regularly to ensure they are stored at the right stage of ripeness.

My Avocado Storage Shortcut Hack

When I get avocados and I know they are getting really ripe, I put them in a bowl of water, completely submerged, and put them in the refrigerator.

Perfect green avos every time!

Can I store leftovers?

No. Avocado smoothie should be consumed right away. You can, however, store the smoothie in airtight bags or ice cube trays in the freezer.

Can I add lemon?

No. Adding citrus to milk is not appealing for the tummy and has curdling affects to the milk. This avocado smoothie should be consumed right away without lemon added.

Can I freeze this?

Yes! Freeze the smoothie in ice cube trays for a very quick blender mix with more milk and more avocado when you are on the go. You can add frozen banana as well.
